I see different loosely worded instructions for what paste into the "Google API key" field. I've tried pasting the entire contents of the downloaded .json file, only the key itself and even just the key id. I still get request denied. Exactly what expects to be pasted there?

Hi,
Whole JSON content should be paste into key field.
Request denied can be Google service permission problem. Can you provide more detailed description of your case?
Best regards
Tom
I was confused by this, too. What needs to be done is, paste the contents of the JSON file (all of it) in the JSON text box in node config
then you also need to enter "Scope" data. This can be retrieved from the node screen (it lists the scope URLs for whichever API you select).
