How do I suggest an idea?

Building the programme together

An expectation of us as ECRs is that we all have skills and/or ideas to contribute to the group. The unstructured session in the program are for us to contribute, share skills and work on projects.

There are two parts of the programme that we will design and build as a group. They are:

1. Collaborative Research Projects - Research projects you are interested in collaborating on. In these sessions you will spend time working towards an outcome (~8 hrs of total programme).

2. Focus Group Sessions - 1 hour sessions around a particular topic or skill (~2 hours of total programme). These can be:

  • traditional talk,
  • fireside chat/panel discussion,
  • interactive activity,
  • teaching a technique or programming language,
  • solving an open problem.

This format is inspired by the rOpenSci Unconference.

It's important that you engage in the conversation, before the retreat.

Suggesting an idea

Head over to the Issues tab and post an idea for a collaborative project or a session you're interested in seeing at the retreat. You don't have to present or lead an idea you post -and you aren't committed to it- these are about exploring ideas and finding like research interests.

Boosting an idea

If you like the idea of a suggested project or session, leave a comment or reaction emoji to indicate your support/interest. You aren't committed to anything at this stage.

Tips, Guidelines & Common Questions about Projects

  • You can change projects as much as you like.
  • You can work on a project you didn't suggest.
  • There are no expected outcomes.
  • You are not expected to finish the project by the end of the retreat.
  • The aim is to learn new skills, meet new collaborators, work on a project you find interesting.
  • You are not committed to any idea you post.
  • Project should try and focus on Frontier Research and think about which ACEMS Research Themes they fit into. This is not a requirement, but a consideration.

Unsure as to what to do?

If you're still a little unsure as to what to do, have a look at the AuUnconf2017's github page for doing the same sort of thing https://github.com/AU-BURGr/UnConf2017/issues and jump onto the #postdoc channel on slack.
