Currently, the page instructs mentees to fork the sample project, fill out their project page, and submit the project for review. This process can be difficult and confusing for those who have never stepped foot in the lab and don't know what is considered adequate for a project page.
We've had the best luck with inviting new mentees into the lab. We show them around, discuss their project scope, assist them with creating their GitHub page, and instruct them on how to get swipe access. However, because the "Getting Started" page makes no mention of visiting the lab itself, it's possible that many students get confused with the project page instructions and give up altogether without reaching out to us.
How can we modify the "Getting Started" instructions to fix this? We could possibly add a bit in the instructions that says something like "Need help? Feel free to join our discord (link to discord) to ask questions or set up a meeting with an AMP lab mentor".
