ENVO standing by for BoR involving ecosystem types. Will crosslink issues
here.

For your amusement, a little history from 2014: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NwfXsEhjGjjXnxNFp0_Lqxviybca6Vyvr1KKmh3HsSs/edit#heading=h.fnrhrh9xowr5 |
The DwC question and answer group put together a repo with values in fields that suggest controlled vocabularies. This includes BoR for some sources. See: https://github.com/tdwg/dwc-qa/tree/master/data/ALADistinctValues/2018-07-12 A few of the sources are already using terms that are not in the current BoR CV, so we should consider including those. |
The category relating DNA in the ALA vocabulary needs some thought. Clearly, extra-chromosomal DNA and RNA could be used as a basisOfRecord, not just genomicDNA. However, this should perhaps be a subcategory of chemical analysis. Some chemicals can be diagnostic of the presence of an organism. You might consider that these are just cases of material samples, but what if you had some form of automated detector of chemicals/DNA where no sample was taken? |
What term should be used in the case of a statement of "fact"? Someone states that a taxon occurs in an area, but doesn't base this on a specific observation. In the case of checklists, floras and fauna I suppose basisOfRecord Literature covers this situation, but perhaps there is need for some thing akin to a personal communication. |
An expansion of the discussion below follows:
We should also include ‘Local knowledge’ or more specifically local ecological knowledge (LEK). Examples could include fishermen, hunters, local guides. They know where the taxa live in specific area/habitat.
A new term also needs to be created for ‘traditional knowledge’ or TEK. This term refers to first nations/indigenous. https://www.fws.gov/nativeamerican/pdf/tek-fact-sheet.pdf
TEK is very different from local knowledge.
https://www.ecologyandsociety.org/vol12/iss2/art34/
Addition of both terms to basis of records would allow many new datasets to be created.
Both are very important for area management and both may allow groups to manage their own datasets which may eventually be shared – the creation of these 2 new terms might result in many ‘private’ resources being created – these can be shared within special interest groups – as these groups learn more about benefits of making data accessible perhaps these can be made public.
(local fishermen are sharing their local knowledge with area management groups to prepare for oil spills and the data policies associated with these datasets are strictly private and may not be shared – this does not mean that the datasets cannot hold DwC records...)

BCO will house a new exemplar controlled vocabulary for the Darwin Core property basisOfRecord (BoR, http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/basisOfRecord).
The current vocabulary for BoR is already imported into BCO, and classified as appropriate.
BoR as a Darwin Core property is defined as "The specific nature of the data record." In BCO, it will need to be defined. It is generally understood that the BoR is the evidence of an occurence, which is in turn the existence of an organism (organismal entity, in BCO) at a particular place and time.
Since github has non-hierarchical issues, this issue is intended to serve as an epic, that is, as a gathering place for other issues which will describe the specific tasks to be completed in order to complete the goal of this issue.
Please put your comments on specific issues, rather than here, whenever possible. As we create issues, they should mention this epic so that they will be gathered here.
