NTR: social isolation #10
Comments
Can we not use an existing, established definition for social isolation? Here is the NCBI definition (at least an example), and if we do not use it, should we not explain why? Link with image below: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK537897/ (NOTE: it would be illustrative - assuming the NCBI definition is not adequate - to articulate why ontological rigor does not permit the NCBI definition to stand. For instance, the NCBI does not distinguish isolation as objective and loneliness as subjective, although "feeling" is necessarily subjective.) (BCIO does not include isolation.) (Would it be necessary to distinguish social isolation from isolation -- that is, isolation is being alone, whereas social isolation can occur even if one is surrounded by people with whom he or she does not have a social relationship. There is the following quirk: is not the sense of social relationship subjective? If so, isolation is objective, but social isolation would at least to some degree be subjective.) |
@smithGit The NCI definitions may make good definition sources (we need to check with Hollen and Julie). For phases ontology, the definitions need to be in Aristotelian form (which they are not). |
Is language barriers or cultural differences caused isolation a 'social isolation'? Based on the given definition it is not. If not, is that kind of isolation a 'social alienation'? Is it what the main difference of 'social isolation' (Physical alone) from 'social alienation'? If we'd like to emphasize 'physical alone' isolation, is it better to add a term 'physical solitude', a subClass of 'solitude'? |
