I spent some time looking for a reason as to why my PS2 Slim responded with "Unable to read disc" when I tried to use my DVD-R.
I tried the following before finding a fix:
Tried playing a normal DVD movie (This worked fine)
Bought new DVD-R (Verbatim DVD-R, I had previously tried TDK DVD-R)
Cleaned my laser with isopropyl.
Tried ImgBurn and CDBurnerXP with all different settings I've seen recommended (OPC for ImgBurn. Compatibility and finalizing for CDBurnerXP)
Detaching memory card, controllers, etc.
Turning on debug on my PS2.
What ended up working, was changing the DISC SPEED to "fast" and TEXTURE MAPPING to "smooth". I also had Debug turned on.
You can also do this by starting your PS2 -> Press triangle for "Version" in the menu -> Press triangle on PlayStation Driver for Options
-> Change both from standard to fast and smooth.
This ended up fixing my issues. If this could be added as a potential solution for reading issues, that would be swell. I think it may come in handy for saving hours of troubleshooting!
Cheers!

Hey friend, I had a problem, it didn't want to work either, but try this one. -Press the power button on the console many times with the DVD inside and it will open the ulancher. I hope it helps you.
