FDO Types and Profiles

FDO Profiles describe the metadata attributes that comprise the record of a FAIR Digital Object (FDO). An FDO Profile lists all metadata attributes, specifying the expected types of values and their cardinality.

An FDO Record (often also called a PID Record) is an instantiation of an FDO Profile for a specific digital object. While an FDO Profile is generic and can be used for multiple FDOs, an FDO Record is specific, listing metadata attributes as key-value pairs that show the precise values for a particular FDO.

The digital object type defines what the object represents (e.g., a "Digital Specimen" or a "Dataset"), which is crucial for:

  • Defining type-specific metadata attributes
  • Determining allowed operations for that object type

The FDO Profile and object type are distinct but closely related concepts.

For more information see the FDO Forum Specification page.
