- Make sure that you have installed the [latest versions of R and RStudio](r_and_rstudio.html). In RStudio, select the "Console" tab of the left panel ![](images/one.png){width=3%} .

- **On Windows 10 only**: Download and install [Rtools](https://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/Rtools/rtools40-x86_64.exe). In RStudio, copy the following code after the prompt `>` ![](images/two.png){width=3%}:

  ```{r install-rtools, eval = FALSE}
  writeLines('PATH="${RTOOLS40_HOME}\\usr\\bin;${PATH}"', con = "~/.Renviron")
  ```

- In RStudio, install the devtools packages by copying the following code after the prompt `>` ![](images/two.png){width=3%}:

  ```{r install-devtools, eval = FALSE}
  if (!require(devtools)) install.packages("devtools")
  ```

- Install the educer package by entering the following code into the console ![](images/two.png){width=3%}:
    
  ```{r install-educer, eval = FALSE}
  devtools::install_github("EDUCE-UBC/educer")
  ```

- Update packages by selecting the "Packages" tab of the bottom right panel ![](images/three.png){width=3%} and then click on "Update" ![](images/four.png){width=3%}.

- If any packages are listed, first click on "Select All" ![](images/one.png){width=3%} and then "Install Updates" ![](images/two.png){width=3%}.

- While updating your packages you might be asked
    
  ```
  Do you want to install from sources the package which needs compilation? (Yes/no/cancel)
  ```
  in the console. Type `no` and hit enter.
