i also see that problem. I'm using a bunch of wyzecam pan in home assistant and every time camera reboots, you have to manually rotate both motors.
i recently played with https://github.com/Dafang-Hacks/rootfs which seems to be a very early version but it has a working calibrate function included, it does exactly what @skorokithakis explaines. it is not implemented as a system service so that you can start it at boot, but it works at least manually.
