What kind of Slingbox is it? |

Hi
Again, fantastic job on making the old Slingboxes work again! I have been
looking all over for a solution to this. Frankly your sling server solution
is SUPERIOR to what Sling folks had thanks in large part to a) the ability
to serve out multiple streams per Slingbox, and your system seems to be FAR
more reliable than what Sling offered.
Any idea on the M1 Slingbox that's due to arrive at my neighbor with no
accompanying associated email addr? Should I tell him to send it back and
find one WITH an email?
Thanks again in advance.
Steve

Sorry about the vague description.
On the Slinger console, I can see the IR codes being received when I send
them from the browser Remote (http://slingerserver:portnum/Remote), but the
codes are not being transmitted to the STB. Have tried different IR
blasters to see if it was a bad blaster. The regular physical STB Remote
works so I know the STB IR receiver works - also if I put that STB beside
another STB/Slingbox that's connected to slinger, if I change channels on
the other STB with Slinger both STBs will change channel, so I know the STB
is working. Something weird in the setup of the Slingbox I presume as
Slinger seems to be doing exactly what it should be.

Can you be a little more specific about "can't get the remote function to
work"? I suspect the video source was previously configured for a different
STB.

They are all SB350s, but I have not checked to see if they are different
revisions. I am offsite at the moment but I can check to see if there are
any differences in SB revisions later today. Not sure how to check firmware
differences in them however.
I am running separate instances of Slinger on my Win10 box (I am not yet
using one consolidated config file). My config.ini between the 3 working
units and the one with the Remote issue are the same (with appropriate
changes for SB names, port nums etc).

Sorry re-read your question - yes all STBs are the same model. I misread
and thought you asked if all the SBs were identical.

Yup - I figured that out last night, that the problem is the keycodes in
these boxes I got online do not have the correct keycodes defined for the
video source. External access for me works fine via a port forward, and I
did disable the finderids last night.
Trouble is I do not know how to define the keycodes; I tried using the
Sling Player Desktop (I found ver 2.0 on Cnet) to do this but of course
that will not let me get into Settings, since it appears to auth against
the now defunct Sling servers. Been reading your docs but I have not yet
found where/how to define key codes. Also been trying to get the
consolidated config.ini working, and I have it working to connect the
audio/video streams to all 5 of the Slingboxes I am testing, however I
cannot get the Remote web page to connect in that setting. So clearly I am
missing something basic in the Remote setup. I created a remote.txt, each
with a different name corresponding to each Slingbox definition in
config.ini, but all are the same (a copy of the standard remote.txt).
As mentioned, Remote worked fine under individual instances of
slingbox_server, but in the consolidated config either I'm entering the
incorrect URL, or my definition in the config.ini is wrong/missing an
entry. Slinbgboxes rp4 and rp5 are the ones that I cannot get to change
channels when running individual instances, but, as mentioned, I
complicated my world by attempting to get the consolidated config working
as well it looks like :-)

Weird. That is the URL I have been using, but when I surf to that URL the
browser starts downloading a file (stream presumably) called rp1 or
rp2...did not have this when I ran it as an individual instance (ie
separate coninstance and config for each sb).
The 35400 is just a random port number I picked.

The URL to give to your media player should be http://serverip:35400/r/rp1
or rp2 or rp3 .....
Where r = URLbase and rp1.. are the Slingbox ids.

Also getting this now while running the consolidated (single) config.ini file - something I did not see in individual instances...still think has something to do with the Remote configuration...I think a few of the "streaming requests" listed had to do with my efforts to connect to the Remote since when I surfed there it started download an object by the name of the sb name definition (rp1) in the config.ini. ...............01/18/2023, 14:17:45.315 " RP5 - MBR" 1 Clients.192.168.1.112:52928 |

I have tried both http://serverip:35400/r/rp1 and
http://serverip:35400/Remote/rp1
In both cases the browser commences a download of an object "rp1" as it
opens the file dialog to save the file.....
So what appears to be happening is when you surf to the Remote page it
causes Slinger to startup another stream rather than invoking the Remote
routine ?? as this is what I see on the console when I tried to open the

Currently running 3.08f - is there a later one? Do not see anything later

I went back to trying to run just one instance, and when I try to connect
to the remote now on one that was working, I am getting this message on the

THe server keeps no state info. You can swap ini files all day long.
Whatever is happening it's not because of anything you did in the unified
config. Again where did 35403 come from? your server pot was 35400.
You should go back to the unified config. To make it a littler easier to
debug just comment out a pile of the SB.s

Tried cycling power but when I click the RECONFIGURE button associated with
the desired SB350 in SlingPlayer Desktop, it just spits back an Error page
advising to do a hard reset - Error code G-501. I presume there is some
other hack one needs to do? I searched the Discussion list and did not see
anything specific on how to do this.

I have Shark here I can possibly setup to capture what is going on from a
test SB350 or M1 here when we reset it (unless someone has already done
this). I may have a SB350 and/or M1 here for which I have no admin pwds,
that I might be able to use as a guinea pig to see what the reset behavior
is. Not sure if that will be helpful.

If you do a factory reset, I (we) don't know what will happen when a new
password is assigned to the box.
I *think* there are three possibilities.
1. The new password is assigned and Mr. Sling updates the password on
your account.
2. The new password is not applied if MR. Sling fails to update. I
think this is the default behavior because Remote SlingPlayers needed the
new password from you slingbox directory to operate
3. The Slingbox thinks it's updated MR. Sling but it didn't really
work because some back office stuff isn't working anymore. This I think is
the worst case because I'm not sure if it would be possible to recover the
new password. Maybe killing SPD after doing the VideoSource config and
before it completes, might leave the default password "admin" in place.
I haven't been brave enough to do this on one of my test boxes because
I need them for development.

Yup - that's why I figured it may be worth a try since I do not have admin
pwd for those two units. Not much to lose in trying it with those. Anything
in particular (beyond IP/MAC addr) I should be filtering on with the
capture?

The only capture I have is from a pre-N9 factory reset. So the 350 and M1
are basically not usable now because you don't have the admin passwords. In
that case, a factory reset will be mandatory to get them going. You can
give it a go and see what happens. You certainly can't make it any worse
:-). We can grab a packet capture if needed if/when it doesn't work.

So I've tried to reset the M1 SB I got off eBay that came with no admin
pwd/original user credentials -
I did a factory reset on it and it allowed me to run through the initial
setup, it updated the firmware in the SB. But, the last part after you
select the videosource and remote setup is where it says "Configuring" on
the screen and that is where I think it fails - that is where Slingplayer
Desktop is likely trying to upload the details on this "new" slingbox into
my account, but the Sling server is likely not taking new registrations.
Therein lies the problem I suppose. When I did a subsequent query with
Postman to get details of slingboxes on my account, only the original 3 I
have are coming back in the response, not the "new" M1 I just configured
after resetting it. Eventually after it tries several times and fails with
its registration, you get an Error Msg saying "Your Slingbox has been
disconnected because of an internal error or poor internet connection.
Click on Reconnect to try again...." When it returns to the SB Directory
that one shows in the list but needs to be setup.
At some point during this setup routine, the SB MUST send that admin pwd
string across the wire, but, it likely is not decipherable.

So - results of my testing with doing a factory reset on a SB M1 model and
SB350 model using Slingplayer Desktop 5.0.0.83. These were two units I got
from eBay for which I did not have the account credentials to extract the
admin passwords from Sling, so figuring they'd be useless and destined for
the trash, I decided to try factory resetting them anyway and see what
happens. Note that results might be different elsewhere given this test
involves a sample size of ONE for each of the two models I tested. I am
sure others will give it a try.
*SB M1*
I did a hard reset (holding in the reset button with a paperclip). It
allowed me to run through the entire setup, including selecting the STB
type, set video source etc. The last step where it presumably registers
this configuration at Sling fails since either the server is off the air,
or, they have their database configured to refuse any new inserts. The good
news is after doing this I was able to connect it to Slinger using the
admin password of "admin" and so far, it works perfectly including all the
Remote functions.
*SB350*
I did the hardware reset (holding in the reset button on the back for 10+
secs). Slingplayer Desktop recognized it in the list of locally connected
Slingboxes, and like the M1, showed the SETUP button. However, unlike the
M1, when I clicked SETUP it displayed "Initializing" and just sat there
spinning and spinning. So it never got to the stage where you walk through
the configuration. Convinced I had bricked the thing, I thought I would try
it on Slinger anyway. To my surprise, it connected to Slinger (using the
"admin" password), and it worked fine, reading the video coming off the
composite video (videosource=1). Of course the Remote does not work since I
never got to tell it what STB to use. It does connect to Slinger fine but
the Remote obviously does not work.

I have three 350's and two ProHD's. The ProHD's and one 350 that I had before N9 all work fine including the HTML remote. I bought the other two 350's from eBay after N9 and one had the email account and password and the other did not. This is what I’ve found with my testing: I’m using SPD 5.0.0.83. When I selected reconfigure, I got the “Initializing” screen that never goes away. After that, when I start SPD, I get a “Loading” screen, then a “Searching for Slingbox devices” screen for about 3-5 seconds, and then it goes directly into “initializing” screen without showing the directory. Video and audio work fine with Slinger and I can control it remotely using the Broadlink RM-4 Mini IR blaster. 350 without email / password: I did a hard reset and tried the approach of creating a new sling account that I saw in one of the discussions. The new “My Slingbox” with the password of “admin” showed in the directory with the setup button which I selected. I’m pretty sure that it went to the “initializing” screen and then hung there. Just got this working today with my 3 Slingbox units under Windows 11. Awesome job on building this!! I now have a neighbor that wants me to set one up for him, but he did not have his own Slingbox. He bought a Slingbox on eBay. Of course it does not come with the associated email address. Is there any way to get the admin password without having the associated email of the Slingbox unit?
