having not found that it other issue that could be related, I note that on a site that worked with the og 8.x-1.0-alpha2 version, after upgrading to 8.x-1.x-dev and even after returning to og 8.x-1.0-alpha3, I got the following errors.
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in Drupal\og\GroupTypeManager->getAllGroupContentBundleIds() (line 204 of modules/contrib/og/src/GroupTypeManager.php).Warning: Illegal offset type in Drupal\og\Plugin\Block\RecentGroupContentBlock->defaultConfiguration() (line 110 of modules/contrib/og/src/Plugin/Block/RecentGroupContentBlock.php).Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in Drupal\og\GroupTypeManager->getAllGroupContentBundleIds() (line 204 of modules/contrib/og/src/GroupTypeManager.php).Warning: Illegal offset type in Drupal\og\Plugin\Block\RecentGroupContentBlock->defaultConfiguration() (line 110 of modules/contrib/og/src/Plugin/Block/RecentGroupContentBlock.php).The return to 8.x-1.0-alpha2 no longer displays an error.
