I found nothing about an open source client that you can recommend. I know it is not an issue in per se, but as a newcomer I get disoriented of how to first connect to this server. I know nethack, diablo, quake, etc and I work with linux and know how to deploy a server. But I think it is a good idea recommend or suggest a tested client for a game server. If not, how you know is it really working as you expect?
I come here to install a private Minecraft alike server to play with my 6 years old child. But I never played the original Minecraft so I don't have the client and I dont want to pay for the closed source version.
Hope someone can guide me to get a working open source version, and I suggest to put that information at least on the wiki, if not on the main github project page, so newcomers like me can find that easily.
thank you

Creating a client based on Glowstone's network stack and game engine could be possible, but it hasn't been tackled.
There is a list of open-source clients compatible with the Minecraft protocol on http://wiki.vg/, but the website appears to be temporarily offline as I checked.
