We'll do this year's rC3 maritime hackers' meetup on some jitsi instance we'll announce here, as soon as possible.

There are fallback solutions, so watch this space, if it shouldn't work or there's no one there.

Hi there,

we just watched your presentation of HFOS [1] -- thanks!

Regarding acquisition of weather information, I don't know what the current state of the onion is with HFOS. We already found some pointers at [2]. However, I wanted to take the chance to outline what we are doing over at @earthobservations.

Currently, we are working on both Wetterdienst [3] and GribMagic [4] and try to fulfill different needs people have when looking at weather data acquisition. On the one hand, scientists usually want to get hold of historical data covering a whole specific dataset / weather data product and we are already serving them well. On the other hand, people want to get a) the current weather and b) the weather forecast for a specific region of interest, which might fit the needs of the sailors community.

While Wetterdienst also handles the latter aspect well, we are currently working on GribMagic to fulfill this goal as well. That is, acquire a specific subset of raw data from numerical weather prediction (NWP) data products, run a bounding box subgrid extraction on it and finally plot the data. People from the sailors community might already know the netCDF and GRIB file formats which are serving raw data from the upstream domestic and international weather agencies.

So, to make the long story short, we believe HFOS components might reuse and integrate those things we are building there as they are also implemented in Python. We will be happy if this can spark your interest and to hear back about your specific ideas you might have about this.

Thanks for your really nice input and interest! Hope you enjoyed the talk! I'll need some time to finish lectures at rC3, but then i'll gladly come back to this 👍

Btw, i have recently played around with brightsky, looks like it's a nice gap-stop to easily getting some data from DWD, but yeah, i'd much prefer a proper worldwide-usable grib-interface! Nice, looking forward to delve into this :D
