Any plans on implementing or migrating to UWSM?

The project seems rather nice with env variable management, XDG-Auto and sets XDG itself, clears up headroom and offload from aquamarine to systemD (This should increase performance), easy way to set all ENVs with 2 dedicated files: 1 for theming, 1 for management, recommended way of launching, clean shutdown and more ++

I've tried it out a bit and logging is more verbose and seems more specific with dbus-broker daemon, clean shutdown feels rather good and systems seem to be a bit snappier (Just a feel, no hard proofs).

Well, that's true, but if we plan to support other distro (this means making it more linuxy/standard) or make our repo portable, uwsm is not ready, yet. Maybe will wait for proper installation in Debian. No worries, the direction should still support uwsm.

Not much. I just had a look at the documentation and moved all vars into dedicated files under XDG_CONF_HOME/uwsm/
One called env-hyprland which contained Hyprland specific vars HYPR* and AQ*.
One called env which contaied everything else related to theming, drivers or whatever elses need to be exported from outside the compositor say Nvidia related envs (Damn you Nvidia).

Just as a pre-caution I also disabled anything set by HyDE at launch, like exporting all envs to dbus and all other envs like XDGs since they are automagically managed by UWSM.

I activated slices with "UWSM_USE_SLICE" set to true and launched Hyprland with Hyprland-UWSM managed .desktop file.
I also tried to wrap apps with their associated .desktop and it worked very smoothly as well.

In reality, the only thing that would be needed to launch with UWSM should be to move all env vars away from *.confs into the UWSM config folder and choose the UWSM-Hyprland session or wrap uwsm with your shell if that is how you launch Hyprland.
I also had to remove these options from the config:

I didn't mess around with any of you guys' scripts, since I would almost guarantee that I'd f*** it up somehow 🤣

Considering how many times an issue related to login are created, it might not be a bad idea to make HyDE bare minimum UWSM support.

From what I remember, leaving prefixed apps, targets / sessions with uwsm app -- didn't seem to have any negative effects, not in userprefs or for the backend from what I saw. Since the session wasn't launched by UWSM and isn't per-say managed by UWSM it won't do anything and would disappear like a fart in the wind.

I'll test it out a bit tomorrow, but It's 03:00 here right now and I do not feel like having to potentially fix stuff, Even less so since I just installed the "leaked" Nvidia 570 Beta driver.

I'll spin up a playground tomorrow and see if I can spot any potential issues having UWSM pre-fixed in a non-UWSM-managed session.

Edit: It seemed to play very nicely with hyprpm plugins and pyprland which was surprising.

Update

So far so good. Been testing out UWSM all day now with bare minimum changes and even leaving boilplates alone. I haven't experienced any issues besides logout menu where I had to prepend or change logout syntaxes from exit to uwsm stop. Without the change you end up on a empty prompt and have to kill SDDM via tty.

I have switched over to using a normal Hyprland instance without using UWSM leaving all my changes. I have not had any issues again besides having to change the loghout script back to using hyprctl and from uwsm stop back to exit

Also no issues with Rofi with or without prepending uwsm to the commands. Only downside of not prepending is that when using UWSM the application won't be managed by UWSM but by the compositor.

I've not seen or noticed any issues with theming or with changing themes.

So far so good -

I am just going to continue using UWSM managed session for now and I'll post here if I notice any bugs or issues related specifically to UWSM or related to UWSM and HyDE.

Edit: By logout I mean the wlogout layout from hyprctl dispatch to UWSM specifics for smooth shutdowns / logouts etc.

No, I sadly didn't find a way. However I attribute this to a skill issue.

I did however notice that when logging out previous sessions does not seem to end properly. The reason I believe or think this is the case is that every time I manually kill my session - The next session that I start goes to a different tty.

As you can see after logging in and out. Now we are up to tty 9 and 15 ( I believe sddm maainly use tty 11?)

Thank you @Olaipai I guess we're not ready yet. The sddm issue is stale. And sddm is sort of core functionality for HyDE.

I thought we can do 100% uwsm support, but atm it will break HyDE. I guess If we intend to support uwsm, we still need to do the normal stuff and consider uwsm as experimental. I will try to integrate the uwsm app commands though.

about the black screen on logout, I'm using hyprland as my sddm compositor so I got the sddm issue you mentioned. And seems like they're clueless on how to handle this.

I went back to a regular Hyprland & Aquamarine managed session and left everything "as-is" from my UWSM experimentation except my usr_env.conf which informs Hyprland about user set prefs.
I went back cuz I broke too much stuff messing around. However, just bare minimum seems to be working just fine in a uwsm managed session and all the prepended syntaxes does not seem to interfere with the "regular" Hypr & AQ session.

Update & My findings thus far

Okay, so now I've messed around a lot with different scripts, configs and stuff I kinda shouldn't mess with (Just to see if I can break it by using UWSM). The only problems I've had has not been related to UWSM or my tinkering, but with the Nvidia 570 beta driver.
And honestly, besides having some issues with using logout - The system has honestly been pretty much faultless on both a UWSM managed session and on a Aquamarine / Hypr* managed session.
Logging out leads to a black screen with a blinking prompt and a black screen on tty2. To get out you need to kill SDDM from tty3.
If anyone knows how to fix this, please let us know.

Most of my changes have just been hacks like appending or prepending "uwsm app --".

One thing I found out - If I try and prepend $default.TERMINAL it leads to theme breaking for icons on Waybar and different apps like Floorp.
I worked around this by manual overriding said app with my own in either hyde.conf or userprefs.conf

Some errors in journalctl. Which is me not prepending EVERYTHING and honestly seem to be harmless. You guys whom is a lot better at this than me will have that solved in zero time.

• Prepended defaults in the boilerplate.
• Removed some duplicates from my own config
• Appended previous command to all $rofi-launch bind according to UWSM docs as well as trying to comply with your formatting $UWSM = "uwsm app -- {cmd}"
• Prepended first mentioned command in most scripts that I use as well as most style menus which has a graphical interface (swww, rofi, wlogout etc.)
• Add all ENVs for my system to XDG_CONFIG_HOME/uwsm/ in respective files according to documentation: env& env-{composistor}

My conclusion so far -

I think hyprland can integrate this stuff well by checking if UWSM service is installed, then try to execute using uwsm. It's too much work to support two methods manually. It's fine if HyDE will do it, but not everyone uses HyDE. I really hope this will be well integrated with hyprland under the hood.

As far as I can tell it looks like UWSM is 'backwards' compatible. So if you have your system configured for UWSM and you launch a session without UWSM, everything just works since the UWSM gets called, but gets ignored and moved on - like a raw string and therefore shouldn't interfere with anything. You also don't really have to wrap as much stuff as I did, nothing wrong with just leaving it to the compositor. I was just experimenting.
For stuff that has a spot in my screen, visible or gets called upon frequently I put it in a wrapped, any other stuff like sysctl, systemctl, loginctl, etc I leave alone.

However, like you said - It would be best if Hyprland decides on a route or have a more integrated way than just a optional .desktop file. I am liking UWSM, it makes the system more polished. Especially when you notice how apps gets their state saved and remembers more and how they gradually shutdown. Just feels good, much more than the abrupt "kill" method, it always irks me lol.

UWSM is kinda unique in the sense that it is compositor agnostic, offloads and manages systemD and XDG instead of the compositor.

What I found really weird was the implementation or "announcement" of UWSM. I just suddenly noticed it on the Hyprland wiki as the 'recommended'-way. Took a look at it, didn't quite understand it and that was it, thought it was a part of Hyprland, and it wasn't?
Idk, kinda reminds of early stages of Hyprland where stuff just got mentioned or added with no explanation unless you followed the 200 daily commits lmao.

There are probably more to it rather than just popularity that landed in the extra repo. I'm speculating that UWSM might become a sort of a merger between distros and compositors of some sorts - Which I personally like! Larger community, more unified, more development and one day; The year of the Linux Desktop! surely, right?
