@berylwaswa and @rachelkg this is mainly for you I guess. We need it for the Moodle materials that @jkmusyoka and @COLIEWO will be helping us with. And this starts at the beginning of June!
In Mozambique I was using R-Instat with participants, some of whom were closer to being beginners than we have had before. And they have asked for an e-learning course on climatic work, fore their staff who are based in the Met stations in each province. Some of them will be (almost) beginners.
So far I feel if you have reasonable Excel skills, then a lot of the start of R-Instat that will be familiar - for example the use of right-click to get a menu. The Excel idea of a filter, and so on. But we are now aiming for users who are more-or-less starting their computer - at least desktop - journey with Excel.
One thing I found is that each extra button/control to be used, had to be explained - and some needed to write it down. So, the way the climatic dailoges infill automatically, is useful. And @Vitalis95 is also improving that aspect. Then @derekagorhom has made a small tweak, so the toolbar is easier. We will also make another small change in the first dialogue, so File > New Data Frame is even easier.
I am still happy with the two tutorials. But I am thinking we may want extra videos, and scripts for beginners to practice with the key resources. 1) Using a dialogue. Add all variables is easy, but adding a group of variables into a multiple reciever needs to be taught. And the idea that the field that is turquoise is the one that will be filled. We also plan to offer more choices - so you can type ahead. Then deleting a variable from a receiver, and the fact you don't need to if it is a single receiver. WE maybe need a few more dialogues to practice completing them, coming back to them, resetting them and so on? I wonder which dialogues we could include?
2. Changes in a dialogue? Should the Add stay as it is, or should it change to Drop when the focus is in a receiver. I think not, because the down-arrow in the (now) Drop will have to change. Will that make it more complicated, or is it an obvious alternative to the right-click in the receiver, just as it is to the Selector?
3. Using the toolbar. I suggest we need to spend more time on this with beginners.
4. Using the right-click menus and how they relate to the Prepare menu. They are similar to Excel, but whould teach them.
5. Filters. I suggest we need a specific video etc on this with a number of examples, i.e. a factor and numeric and missing as well as the filters being useful objects. Then also filter-from factors is useful.
6. Navigating a data frame. So, looking at data - which we want to encourage.
7. Saving and Exporting data.
8. Entering data - now we are back on home ground - we already have some materials.
9. Entering a regular sequence, etc. I suggest we need lots of materials for people to practice.
10. Changing the language - we have this.
Now, our first group is for climatic. I am still inclined to not use the climatic menu at this early stage. But I guess we should use a few more climatic examples.
We are going to be using all this in our e-siac course. I am keen that we have some videos that can be reviewed by those with experience - and they move on. Beginners have practices they can do so they have perhaps a busy few days, before moving to the climatic menu in week 2.
