abstract: "Over the past decade, significant advancements have been made in climate and earth observation, primarily driven by machine learning algorithms. The key to the success of these algorithms lies in the quantity and quality of the datasets used. Paradoxically, creating large, high-quality datasets remains one of machine learning development's most undervalued and overlooked aspects. The current state indicates that finding the right dataset for the task at hand can be challenging, and few (if any) datasets fully adhere to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) guidelines. In response to this challenge, we introduce the Taco specification, a new standard to facilitate the creation of fully FAIR Earth Observation and Climate datasets. Taco is inspired by the specifications of Croissant Responsible AI (RAI) and the SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC). Additionally, it incorporates naming conventions from the OGC Training Data Markup Language. To demonstrate the effectiveness of Taco, we have converted all existing cloud detection datasets to this new standard, resulting in the largest multi-sensor and multi-temporal dataset, consisting of over 200,000 human-labeled images."

abstract: "In this work, we propose an adaptive importance sampling (AIS) scheme for multivariate Bayesian inversion problems, which is based in two main ideas: the inference procedure is divided in two parts and the variables of interest are split in two blocks. We assume that the observations are generated from a complex multivariate non-linear function perturbed by correlated Gaussian noise. We estimate both the unknown parameters of the multivariate non-linear model and the covariance matrix of the noise. In the first part of the proposed inference scheme, a novel AIS technique called adaptive target AIS (ATAIS) is designed, which alternates iteratively between an IS technique over the parameters of the non-linear model and a frequentist approach for the covariance matrix of the noise. In the second part of the proposed inference scheme, a prior density over the covariance matrix is considered and the cloud of samples obtained by ATAIS are recycled and re-weighted for obtaining a complete Bayesian study over the model parameters and covariance matrix. Two numerical examples are presented that show the benefits of the proposed approach."

abstract: "Average and conditional treatment effects are fundamental causal quantities to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment in various critical applications, including clinical settings and policy-making. Taking aside the gold-standard estimators obtained with randomized trials, multiple methods have been proposed to estimate treatment effects using observational data. Here, we show how a class of graphical models, termed staged event trees, can be effectively used for the aforementioned causal inference tasks. These models offer the advantage of being easily interpretable, enhancing their utility in practical applications. We implement classical estimators using staged event trees and showcase their capabilities through simulation studies and real-world applications."
