Ideally, we'd own the data we're creating by chatting in Matrix.

Currently, instead of running our own Matrix server (where we'd own the data) we are using the matrix.org home server. That means we should probably be downloading it periodically.

There are multiple benefits of data liberation:

  • The downloaded data is a backup.
  • We can search though the data even if matrix.org home server is down,
  • We can probably analyze the data more easily and quickly if we have a local copy.

https://gitlab.com/argit/matrix-recorder is listed at https://matrix.org/docs/projects/other/matrix-recorder but is flagged as "not actively maintained" and hasn't been updated in years.

I downloaded the Matrix logs and put them here: IQSS/irclog.iq.harvard.edu@001be30

Closing.

(The Matrix channel is inactive now that we've moved to Zulip: #22.)
