Having a .ipj (icy project) file which is a XML file describing the desktop state :

opened images
opened plugins / plugin states

Then all images are saved into a sub folder names as the .ipj file 👍
project_1.ipj
project_1\img1.tif / xml
project_1\img2.tif / xml
project_1...

All opened images are when we load the .ipj we try to restore as much as possible the desktop state to when we saved the ipj file.
