In the coming February 19-21, Jrevels (Jarrett) and I will attend the 17th SQuInT workshop in Berkeley for quantum information science and technology. SQuInT is one of the earliest annual workshop on quantum information science in the world. Jarrett will bring his poster representation on the QuBase.jl project which will be mainly based on his pioneering work on quantum representations in Julia. Therefore, the QuBase.jl project and the associated poster needs to be shaped up before the middle of Feb, 2015. Jarrett and I will be involved in this preparation process for the poster. All related materials, including the poster, could be previewed on GitHub (some time later). I open this issue to accept feedback regarding what should be emphasized and highlighted and so on.

Edit on Jan 6: I should leave this to @jrevels. He decides whether to have his poster accessable to the public domain before presenting. Sorry for the early rush, and thanks for his dedication!

The abstract I submitted was more focused on QuDirac.jl, since I have a better idea of what will be ready in that project by the time SQuInt rolls around. However, I think I'm going to be moving some of the functionality in QuDirac.jl over to QuBase.jl pending community review, so what is represented will probably end up being a little bit of both.

@jrevels Maybe I am too late since I just got a chance to work out those detailed planning job last weekends, I think you can just copy most part of the QuDirac.jl into the new repo and start modifying them instead. The work to be done before the workshop should based on your previous work, and many members here have read your documents. Now, it is the time for people to making more complicated tests, adjustments, benchmarks and demonstrations as soon as possible so that we can have some picturesque examples on the poster to show up. See the proposal.

Alright, if it's been agreed upon then I'll take point on doing that. I have no problem with moving functionality to QuBase if people find it immediately useful.

The point is what can be sold to our audiences in SQuInT? Notice that the participants are all from selected leading institutes of quantum information science with sharp eyes and limited time. From my past experience attending this meeting, most of the participants can only talk to very limited poster presenters. There will be 70+ posters this year with ~180 conferencees. "Yet another toy to manipulating quantum states and operators" may not be eye-catching for most of them. The intrinsic advantages of Julia, like parallel computing, high-speed, high expressiveness, may be better to be exhibited through on-topic and up-to-date examples with more advanced quantum solvers assistant. It would be good to also power other people participating this preparation process and make a bridge for their future projects. Don't worry about the information you submitted to SQuInT. Your poster's title and abstract can be changed before some point. We can chat on those points online when you have time. My time is relatively flexible in the coming two weeks.

In fact, I was selling Julia to my research group for a long time. Professors and my colleagues here are very interested in those projects we are carrying on. I will surely introduce you to them during the meeting--and they want to talk to you as well. Next year, our research center is sponsoring a student of us to give a software carpentry workshop for our whole university students (I am preparing some practical materials for the center's students as well), and the speaker will also fly to another university to make a two-day long software carpentry workshop in the summer. If your interaction during the meeting with the key members of my institute goes well, I might be able to persuade the center to fund us for more meaningful activities. You may also be invited to SQuInT next year, which will be held in my city. If you like, I can help coordinate the activities helpful for the presentation purpose for sure. However, no pressure on those things. Take it as an opportunity for your future. There are many bright researchers from world-wide universities, institutes like NASA and companies including Microsoft and Google. It would be good to plan more meaningful things ahead.

Merry Christmax,
Qi
