Context: I was at this event where they were showing off a Meta Quest 2 which was de-facebooked so that it's not a huge privacy nightmare that had the ability to play games from their gaming server via ALVR including those that are not made for VR by placing you in a virtual room where you have a huge screen that the game is projected onto and the headset being able to set up basically a virtual office with bunch of open windows around to work on various projects that seem like it would be great for productivity for me to possibly get rid of my docking station with displays at my home.

The problem for me is that it still runs android and is basically glorified phone that can't call and has custom frontend, where for me ideally i would like to have my NixOS fork on it and have it set up as a thin client that connects to my compute server for compilation and gaming server for streaming games, but that is able to do the VR in a standalone way like the quest 2 does -> Is there such VR (or ideally VR and AR-on-demand like the apple thing) that i could get off the shelf that is as hackable as the Quest 2 (likely due to it being ~80 EUR headset 2nd hand) that could run an open-source XR desktop?

As currently my plan was to research more in VR and then fork relativty which seems like it would be a lot of work in comparison to getting Quest 2 and writing kernel modules for it to do Linux Mainline and reverse-engineering the PCBs as needs be? Though there will likely be a lot of work on processing the data from the IR cameras to be able to track objects etc.. as it seems that META is using lot of machine learning for that.
