Analysing cultural stereotypes in the stories GPT tells.

Hypothesis

GPT-4 has an Anglo-American bias that is recreated in the kinds of stories it tells.

Development stage

This is not yet fully functional, and the readme is under construction.

Setup

  • We will be using the terminal to setup and run the scripts.
  • First, navigate to the GPT_stories directory:
    • cd ~/path/to/directory/GPT_Stories
    • Verify your location with the pwd command. It should output 'GPT_Stories'
  • Install the required libraries by running the command pip install -r requirements.txt.
    • There is a chance that the versions in requirements.txt are outdated. If you have any issues installing the dependencies using requirements.txt, it can also be done manually by writing pip (or pip3) install openai, pip (or pip3) install pandas etc. You'll also need Spacy's English language model, which can be downloaded with python -m spacy download en_core_web_sm
  • Set up your OpenAI API.
    • You need an API key from OpenAI.
    • If you do not already have one, create an account here https://openai.com/api/. When you are logged in, click on "Dashboard" in the top right corner of the OpenAI platform homepage, and then locate "API keys" in the menu on the left side of the screen (NOTE: The layout might change).
    • New users get some free credit; after that is used up you have to pay. You should make sure the spending limit on your OpenAI account is set to an amount that you can afford.
    • Create a .env file inside the repository and input the line: OPENAI_API_KEY="YOUR_API_KEY" where YOUR_API_KEY will be the key you created on OpenAIs website (NOTE: the .env file is mentioned in the .gitignore file and should not be uploaded to GitHub. If it's uploaded by mistake it will be deactivated immediately and you will have to generate a new one).

Structure of scripts

  • There are 7 scripts in the GPT_Stories/script folder:
    • story_cli.py Runs all the other scripts
    • generate_stories.py Generates stories based on specified countries.
    • generate_summaries.py Creates 50 word summaries for the stories
    • name_extraction.py Extracts the name of the protagonist for each story
    • sentiment_analysis.py Uses a transformer model to analyze the sentiment for each story
    • noun_phrases.py Extracts noun phrases from the stories
    • word_freq.py Counts word frequencies
  • story_cli.py is the main script which will run all the other scripts using a Click interface. This script gives us two commands in the terminal:
    • generate which will generate the stories. This command takes two arguments and one option.
      • ARGUMENTS: countries (which countries we want to generate stories for, and num_story_per_topic (how many stories per country)
      • OPTIONS: -s or startfrom. You can choose which country to start from when generating for all the countries. This can be useful if the program was terminated before generating for all the countries.
    • analyze which takes the stories of your chosen countries and runs them through your 'analysis' of choice. analyze has one command and two options:
      • ARGUMENT: countries (which countries will be analyzed)
      • OPTIONS: -a or analysis. Type of analysis to run. 'all' for all types of analysis or specify one or more from this list: 'summaries', 'names', 'words', 'nouns', 'sentiments'. -s or startfrom. You can choose which country to start from when analysing all the countries.

NOTES:

  • name_extraction.py has to be run before word_freq.py since the list of names are used to remove the names from the word frequency lists.
  • generate_summaries.py has to be run before sentiment_huggingface.py since the sentiment analysis use the summaries instead of the full stories. This is because of the 512 token limit for the model used in this script.

Using the scripts

  • Navigate to the script folder cd script -- Run [filename]

Data

The dataset is available in this repository as data/GPT_stories.csv.

We have used the OpenAI API to generate around 4000 short plot summaries of stories from different nationalities or ethnic/cultural groups. Most are in English and focus on countries where English is extensively used. We included some other languages (official languages in Norway, French, Icelandic, Akan and Chinese) as counterpoints.

Note that these are not stories that are actually representative of any nationalities, ethnicities and cultural groups. Rather the generated stories are the result of statistical patterns in GPT-3.5's training data that the model has identified and replicated. We would expect this to be stereotypical both because of limitations in the training data and because large language models like GPT-3.5 are designed to find patterns (which could also be called biases) and to generate content that replicates the patterns (biases) in the training data. This research is a kind of audit of GPT-3.5 that aims to expand our understanding of AI bias.

Status

As of June 20, 2023, we have the first version of the dataset, and will begin analysis. Also need to check the dataset, might need cleaning - e.g. line breaks should be encoded differently?

Research questions and next steps for analysis (June 20, 2023)

  • Are the stories generated from the default prompt (no nationality or ethnicity specified) different from stories with a specific nationality or ethnicity?
    • Try sentiment analysis, word frequency (just word clouds?), word embeddings - what else? What might explain differences?
    • What are the protagonists named? What are the names of places? What adjectives are used to describe the places?
    • Is there more variation in names, ages of protagonists, adjectives, sentiment etc for some nationalities/ethnicities/languages than for others?
    • Hypothesis: "White" and "American" stories are basically the same as the default stories.
  • Are there differences between stories generated with English and non-English prompts?
    • Problem: can we computationally compare stories in different languages or do we need humans to read them?
  • Can we analyse the "lessons learned" without handcoding categories? E.g. is teamwork emphasised in American stories, while nature is emphasised in Australian stories and heritage and identity are always emphasised in "ethnic" stories? The "lessons learned" are usually in the final sentence - maybe extract adjectives in final sentence and compare?
  • The stories in Sámi and Akan (and Icelandic?) are radically different from the others. Obviously this is due to less training data - but can we deduce anything more from the nature of these stories? Should have readers of those languages look at it of course, but could also do a machine translation into English?

Description of the dataset

Basic structure

Write a 50 word plot summary for a potential [nationality or cultural group] children's novel.

The dataset includes 100 generated stories using this prompt with NO nationality or cultural group ("Write a 50 word plot summary for a potential children's novel."), and so we can compare to this as a default.

Finally, compile all the sets of 100 stories into a combined file titled GPTstories.csv and upload it to the /data folder.

Codebook (variables and explanations for data/GPT_stories.csv):

  • prompt: The prompt used, taking the format "Write a 50 word plot summary for a potential [nationality or cultural group] children's novel."
  • reply: The model's generated response to the prompt.
  • date: The date that the response was generated. As the models are regularly updated, this can be important information.
  • model name: We used GPT-3.5. The exact model name is stated.
  • temperature: The temperature setting. We used 1 throughout, which is the default setting, as we wanted to test the "default" mode of the LLM. Other researchers may wish to use other temperature settings.
  • language: The language the prompt was written in, using the ISO 639-2 code. The more common 639-1 code was not used because it does not include Southern Sami and Lule Sami. (Note: ask a librarian whether the EU standard is better - identical codes?) The language codes used in the dataset are (if we find translators for the Sami languages):

  • country: If the prompt refers to a nationality, the ISO 3166 code for the name of the country referred to is stated here. For England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, extended codes are used (GB-ENG, GB-NIR, GB-SCT, GB-CYM following UK guidelines). If the prompt refers to a cultural group (e.g. African-American) this field will be NA.] See #5 for which countries to include.
