NCCL SHARP plugin

Requirements

Build from source

Please make sure that all requirements are satisfied.

  1. Download and load HPC-X for your OS and MOFED versions
OS_DISTRO=ubuntu18.04-x86_64
MLNX_OFED=MLNX_OFED_LINUX-5.0-1.0.0.0
wget http://content.mellanox.com/hpc/hpc-x/v2.6/hpcx-v2.6.0-gcc-${MLNX_OFED}-${OS_DISTRO}.tbz -O hpcx.tbz
tar xjf hpcx.tbz
module use hpcx-v2.6.0-gcc-${MLNX_OFED}-${OS_DISTRO}/modulefiles
module load hpcx
  1. Build NCCL-SHARP plugin
  • With UCX support
% git clone https://github.com/Mellanox/nccl-rdma-sharp-plugins
% cd nccl-rdma-sharp-plugins
% ./autogen.sh
% ./configure --with-ucx=$UCX_DIR --with-sharp=$HPCX_SHARP_DIR
% make
% make install

  • Without UCX support
% git clone https://github.com/Mellanox/nccl-rdma-sharp-plugins
% cd nccl-rdma-sharp-plugins
% ./autogen.sh
% ./configure --with-sharp=$HPCX_SHARP_DIR --without-ucx 
% make
% make install

Run

Before start follow SHARP deployment guide to set up SHARP environment.

NCCL automatically picks up network plugin when it available in library search path. Note that HPCX 2.6 already contains latest stable NCCL Plugin and sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH when loaded. Additionally to enable collnet support in NCCL add NCCL_COLLNET_ENABLE=1 environment variable

# libnccl_net.so is in <plugin_install_dir>/lib
% module load hpcx
% export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<plugin_install_dir>/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
% export NCCL_COLLNET_ENABLE=1
% mpirun -x LD_LIBRARY_PATH -x NCCL_COLLNET_ENABLE nccl-tests/build/all_reduce_perf -b 128 -e 512M

Following table holds complete list of variables that control plugin behavior:

NCCL_PLUGIN_P2P ib, ucx Specify what point to point layer will be used ib
NCCL_SHARP_MAX_COMMS 0, 1, 2 Number of allowed sharp jobs per device 1
NCCL_IB_PCI_RELAXED_ORDERING 0, 1 Disables/enables PCIe relaxed ordering support for ib. Useful when running in virtual environment 0

NCCL Tests benchmark example

For NCCL-UCX performance benchmarking NCCL Tests can be used
