Issue details

During the research software templates session in RSECon24, there were several comments in the mentimeter which I have interpreted as related to the different profiles which are available through the template.

At the moment, 3 profiles are available. We should revise these profiles to make sure:

  • User profiles cover the different needs of various groups (potentially) using the template.
  • It is clear to users that they can use the template for different profiles.
  • It is clear to users when to use which profile.

Mentimeter comments were along the lines:
Templates often too detailed. A minimal version would be good;
A very small one for mini projects;
Should support customisation. Different groups have subtly different needs;
Consensus as to what practices should be included can be challenging;
Conformance levels - maybe matched to project maturity;
There should be well-defined extension points

It may be worth considering other templates too: if a particular use-case/profile is already covered by another template, we could just refer people to that template instead of trying to cater for everyone.
