A user-submitted document, containing a complex ("Complex(SLC16A9/Carnitine:FAO dependent pathway)") wherein the complex appears and behaves (see below) like a plain node; consequently, its two components ("SLC16A9/Carnitine" and "FAO dependent pathway") appear distinct from it.
In looking at the underlying element db data, the two components don't possess a parentId value, which would indicate they are components of a complex, however the complex does indeed reference them.
Have not been successful in reproducing this bug - yet.
Another strange encounter is in editing mode for this document, when I drag the complex away from the components, I can represent a nested complex, as if this complex behaves as a regular node:
