There is a chance that the URL might have to change soon since the British Indian Ocean territory which .io belongs to is ceasing to exist. No idea how GitHub would handle that.

If and when such a decision is made, there will be a phase out period over multiple years. I assume that Github will replace the .io URLs well in advance before the domain cease to exist.
