Blackjack

Get closer to twenty one than the dealer, without going over.

The origin of Blackjack has no clear consensus among researchers to this day. Some say it may have originated in France around 1700 as a casino game called Vingt-et-Un, which translates to twenty-one. The game of Vingt-et-Un is similar to other French card games of the time such as Chemin de Fer or Ferme.

Rules

The objective of blackjack is to beat the dealer. In order to beat the dealer a player's hand must outscore the dealer's hand without busting, or have the dealer bust themselves.

Highlights

  • Blackjack may be played with one to eight decks of 52-card decks.
  • The score of a hand is the sum of each card's point value.
  • A two card hand equal to 21 is a Blackjack.
  • A hand greater than 21 is a Bust.
  • If the dealer and the player both exceed 21, or bust, the dealer wins.

Scoring

A hand is scored by totaling the points of each card. The highest hand is the "blackjack", consisting of an Ace and any 10 point card. This two card hand outranks all other 21 point hands.

Game Phases

A session starts when you sit down to play blackjack. Within a session many matches may be played. After a session starts, a match will begin with wagering and end with scoring. When a match ends you may play another by remaining seated or end the match by standing up and ending the session.

Starting (Session)

Blackjack is starting.

Tasks
  • Decide if you really want to play blackjack.
  • Prepare cards and table for starting a game session.
  • Ensure each player is ready for a game session.

Wagering (Match)

Blackjack is wagering.

Tasks
  • Each player declares the bet they have wagered.

Dealing (Match)

Everyone is dealt an initial hand of two cards starting from the dealer's left to their far right (clockwise). A single card is dealt to everyone first, followed by another single card. The players initial cards will be dealt face up unless playing a single-deck game. The dealer's hand receives its first card face up and its second card face down, called the hole card. The dealer peeks at but does not reveal the hole card unless it makes the dealer's hand a blackjack.

Tasks
  • Shuffle the cards within the deck.
  • Deal a single card to everyone's hand.
  • Deal a single card to everyone's hand, again.
  • Dealer declares if they have a blackjack or not.

Playing (Match)

After receiving an initial two cards, players must choose whether to hit, stand, double, split or surrender. Each option has a corresponding hand signal. Every player may hit as many times as desired so long as the point total is not above 20. Upon reaching 21 (including soft 21), the hand is normally required to stand. A bust is an irrevocable loss and the player's wagers are immediately forfeited to the house. After a bust or a stand, play proceeds to the next player clockwise around the table. When the last player has finished, the dealer reveals the hole card, and either stands or hits.

Tasks
  • Surrender: Give up a half-bet and retire from the game.
  • Insurance: Before the dealer checks the hole card, a 2:1 side bet is offered when the dealer's up card is an ace.
  • Hit: Take another card from the dealer.
  • Stand: Take no more cards and end their turn.
  • Double Down: Double wager, take a single card and finish.
  • Split: If the two cards have the same value, separate them to make two hands.

Scoring (Match)

When the outcome of the dealer's hand is established, any hands with bets remaining on the table are resolved in counterclockwise order. Bets on losing hands are forfeited, the bet on a push is left on the table, and winners are paid out.

Tasks
  • Each player compares their score to the dealers.
  • The cards in each player's hand is collected back into the deck.
  • Each player's bet is paid.
  • Decide if you will remain seated for another match or end the session.

Exiting (Session)

Blackjack is exiting.

Tasks
  • Prepare cards and table for exiting a game session.
  • Clear the session of all players.
