The exporter originally only worked with meshes, but I found it to work on curves as well, at least with the model I was trying to export at the time. Without having investigated much, and based on the error message you're getting, I would say that your model contains curves that are "empty" or otherwise not possible to export. Try converting those curves into meshes with Blenders own function for this, before using the exporter. I forget what key is used for that, but I'm sure it's there.
