DeepL via screen scraping seems to be broken (at least for Japanese)

Same here. Original and translation language does not matter.
Looks like deepL has changed their API or applying stronger restrictions.
Cutting short bulk size does also not help.

DeepL has crazy restrictions... try the "Auto-translate via copy-paste"...
