Detailed install walkthrough

  1. Install Tauon Music Box.
    • If you are using an Arch Linux based distro, I recommended installing the AUR version (Unless you specifically want the permission control of the Flatpak version). I suggest using an AUR helper as there are multiple AUR only dependencies which could get tedious installing manually.
    • To install the Flatpak version, run flatpak install flathub com.github.taiko2k.tauonmb

If you don't have Flatpak already installed, see instructions for your distro here

    • The current official AUR and Flatpak packages include the proprietary BASS libs, however it's possible to use Tauon Music Box exclusively using the GStreamer backend (Only some features like the visualiser will be disabled). I don't currently package these separately simply because it's time consuming to do (Maybe I should? Let me know what you think.) If you're interested in building such packages and are feeling adventurous, you can take a look at instructions see here
  2. If you want to be able to use MusicBrainz Picard as an editor and don't have it installed already, you can find instructions on how to install on this page: https://picard.musicbrainz.org/downloads/

Note that the Flatpak version won't work with Tauon, it must be host installed.

    • For Arch Linux, to install: sudo pacman -S picard
  3. [Flatpak only] If you wan't to be able to import music outside your home music folder and/or want to be able to launch Picard as above, see Flatpak Permissions
  4. [Flatpak only] Subpixel font rendering may not be active out the box, if you want to ensure optimal font rendering and are feeling adventurous, you can explore an optional workaround explained here: Flatpak Font Rendering
  5. [AUR only] If you have CJK characters in your music collection, you may want to install the matching font for those: sudo pacman -S noto-fonts-cjk
  6. If you want to enable Last.fm scrobbling, you can authorize and enable in MENU > Settings... > Accounts > last.fm and follow instructions from there.
    • If you want to see your last.fm friend love hearts, click Get friend loves. Note that this may take a long time and probably not recommended to do if you have many last.fm friends.
  7. If you want many artist thumbnails to be available, you may want to enter a Discogs access key in the accounts settings.
  8. If you download music from the internet often, you may want to take a look at enabling the download monitor. See the Extract archive on import and Monitor downloads settings under the Functions tab of settings.
