2 faces selection fails on first try

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. create a cube
2. select add handle tool
3. select 2 faces with shift


What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
When select the second face while holding shift, the first one is deselected. 
Doing it again solves the issue.
