Visual Studio 1 month license?

We recently raised an issue due to receiving an error that the Visual Studio license had expired. This issue was closed as we have been told it is normal behaviour. Our patching schedule for self hosted agents often goes beyond 1 month and is sometimes 6 weeks apart and we have never had this problem before.

Is the 1 month license new? When was it introduced? Does it apply to every version of Visual Studio?

We have searched issues and discussions and google and can find no reference to the license length. Some clarification on this matter would be good.
