🚀 The feature, motivation and pitch

For development and debugging, it would be lovely to be able to train on a single accelerator (e.g. a Macbook Pro Mx that many developers use).

Alternatives

Alternatives would be simulating a CUDA device. Given that the changes are minimal (see PR #769), I don't consider this alternative worthwhile.
