Identifying last access to files?

I wonder if it would not be good to have the possibility to find out when a file from the storage was last accessed. I currently want to clean up a file storage and can't decide what will never be used again... esp. when files are duplicates. If we could see what the last access of a file was (and by what client?) that would help a lot!
