framework upgrade with incompatible?

I notice PR 12449, adding a new field randomness_config in struct DKGSessionMetadata in dkg.move file, but this cause incompatible issue when framework(including dkg.move) upgrading, because it cannot pass compatible check when move module upgrading after adding new field in struct of move module...
We all know now Aptos mainnet already contains this PR patch... I'd love to know how the actual upgrade operation works?

i've got to know this PR is just middle stage of one function development;
the upgrade will take place :

1. from dkg.move without DKGSessionMetadata defined
2. to DKGSessionMetadata full defined on dkg.move
