power-assert and "type": "module"

Hello,

I'm not sure whether this should be a bug or a feature request.

We are in the process of moving our projects to ESM and we are doing this by adding "type": "module" to our package.json files.
Since then, power-assert does not work anymore along with AVA.

AFAIU this is due to the fact that AVA relies on babel to transform the test code for power-assert to work as expected.

Is there any way to work around this ?

power-assert requires Babel, yes. Enabling the babel option in AVA's configuration requires https://github.com/avajs/babel to be installed.

That package does not support ESM, there's an open issue at avajs/babel#13.

I was expecting something like that, thanks for the confirmation.
I was wondering if using a package like https://github.com/power-assert-js/espower-loader would help in the meantime but I didn't see any AVA option like the --require provided by mocha.
Is there a way to do that?

You can configure require in the ava.config.js file, IIRC we don't support that as a CLI flag.
