I generaly agree that cloning the repo is not a great long-term solution.
I think long term the plan is to have an installer that deploys the files to a dotfile in your home directory (or somewhere else), e.g. ~/.counterscale.
My mistake was that counterscale-dev was showing up with visits in the dashboard. Only after downloading the assets and following the steps did my own siteID show up.

Downloading the assets should be included somewhere. I made the mistake of cloning the project instead the first time. Perhaps as step 4? https://github.com/benvinegar/counterscale/releases/tag/v2.0.0
