I can't seem to find an option for adding a new language in translation.io. I would like to start a Norwegian (bokmål) translation. Could this be arranged?

What are the requirements for adding a new language translation? Do we need a critical mass of contributors?

hi @braaar, looking at translation.io I see two entries for Norwegian (Bokmål): 'no' and 'nb'. From a little bit of digging I ran into this discussion that suggests that I should look into implementing 'no' so as to be inclusive of any dialect of Norwegian.

FWIW I'm not a major contributor to this project but I'll look into this if the proposed changes work for you.

Either is fine with me, I'd be writing in Bokmål regardless. I would lean towards nb to be more explicit about which language is being used, as I would see it as quite strange to mix them in the context of the bikeindex app.

An all-inclusive language code makes sense if you have editorial content such as articles or blog posts which may use either Bokmål or Nynorsk depending on what the individual authors use.

@braaar to answer your initial question of adding a Norwegian (nb) translation - that lies in the config of the app itself before Norwegian becomes an option on translation.io (to the best of my knowledge).

Translation.io makes the process fairly easy as they suggest a translation for every key in the project. I'm happy to go through every key and use the suggested translation but I'm also open to add you (and potentially others) to the project to help with the translation process. There are 3607 keys (words/phrases) that need translating so I'd welcome any help in either translating or simply validating the choices I make.

I could also just push my config changes to the bikeindex repo and if you've already been added to the bikeindex's translation.io account you should be able to see nb as an option (finally). IDK what works best for you and the @sethherr

@eld120 I've already been added to translation.io, so I'm ready to get started with validating auto-translations and translating manually.

Once it's set up I was thinking of asking my network for help, so you might get some additional requests for translation.io access.

@braaar check out translation.io, Norwegian is now a translation target for bikeindex
