Running on ESP8266 (ESP01 et al) possible?

Hey there, I‘m not too experienced with Espressif SoCs. However I thought a ESP8266-based controller might be enough to run this simple emulator, as it should not need Bluetooth or multicore features. So using a super cheap module like the ESP01 could be more appropriate.

a) Am I right?
b) Which changes would be needed to accomplish this?

Porting this to the ESP8266 would be quite some work, and this project is kinda abandoned.
