Workaround for vehicles that don't support start/stop charging commands

I have an X3 30e for which I've been using the bimmerconnect python successfully for some time to receive status information. Based on that status information I would like to optimize the charging window for the vehicle.
Unfortunately, my vehicle does not support the connected drive start/stop charging commands so I've been trying to use a workaround by switching between immediate and delayed charging. The problem is that before switching to delayed charging, the departure time needs to be set and activated. If not the command fails.
So far I've not been able to work around that requirement. Any suggestions on how to set and activate departure time or another way to control the charging of my vehicle?
