Hate to post three separate issues in two days relating to the recent change in how the Following feed functions, but I'm trying to detangle some sources of confusion that have likely compounded the reaction to this change.

For context, the recent change to the default Following feed is: Users should only see interactions between other users when they follow two or more of them.

In the Following Feed Preferences page, the description for "Show Replies" reads:

  • Set this setting to "No" to hide all replies from your feed.

firefox - 2024-09-11 - 11-22-59

By stating "all replies" here, it implies that the default behavior is to show ALL replies (ie: the old and original behavior), rather than just replies between users that you follow. Rewording this description would make Bluesky's default behavior for the Following feed more clear.

Examples:

  • By default, Bluesky shows replies between the users that you follow. Switch this setting to "No" to hide replies between followed users from your feed.

This issue is currently compounded by #5288 (and in turn, #5049), which IS resulting in strangers' replies appearing in the Following feed, adding to confusion.
