Add ons are basically regular WordPress plugins. But yes, some documentation on this would be useful. Is there anything specific you would like to see in such documentation?

a simple hello world example could be useful.

basically my goal is to add syslog functionality (#114 , #366 ) obviously without editing the existing code.
maybe extending a class will suffice?

Please let us know if you are able to accomplish building this add-on, many would like to access their server and security logs outside the terminal and in the dashboard especially those who are self-managed. Right now, I use the remote_syslog with the Papertrail app to do so.
