JSON Translation File Semantics

The brdgm.me applications use JSON files for providing the translations of all texts.

Guidance on editing these:

  • JSON file format is used
  • You can edit them with any text editor, but it's most comfortable with an editor with built-in JSON support, e.g. Visual Studio Code (it's free)
  • Make sure you do not make the JSON syntax invalid by accidentally deleting curly braces or forgetting to enclose the strings in quotes
  • Sometimes placeholders like {number} are used. Do not remove them, and do not translate the placeholder keyword - it's replaced in the application with an actual value.
  • Some string may contain small HTML snippets like <a href='https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2823056/rno-alternative-solo-mode' target='_blank' rel='noopener'><b>A.R.N.O. 2.0 Solo Mode</b></a> - you can translate the inner text, but keep the other markup and link target unchanged.
  • Some strings contain multiple variants separated by | - this is pluralization, providing both different plural variants which are picked on the actual number from the context.
