We will need an IRC server on the production server. Decide which one to use (ircd, etc.) and what server to set it up on. Configure it to our needs, deciding what channels are necessary and how to authenticate.

Yakko is already running an irc service that we don't really want open to the public and it would be a pain to run it on a nonstandard port. WMU is also unlikely to give us a firewall hole for an IRC service. For these reasons I think it would be a smart decision to run the IRC service on a server external to WMU. I would be willing to run the IRC server on my personal servers for PLAN. PLAN staff would be give IRC Admin access. I have a lot of experience setting up and maintaining IRC servers on various IRC networks.
@dyladan If you want to do what you suggested and setup the IRC server you can go ahead. That would allow @bkellkell to start implementing KiwiIRC. Thanks for offering.
Further into the future, I'm also considering a little project to turn my old room at my parents' house into a server room of some kind so I would be available as a possible alternative.
That would work, but I'd recommend making a server more people can touch and explicitly for irc on this. I'm looking perhaps at the cheapest digital ocean VPS here, which is $5 a month.
