If no search term is entered, the default sort by “Relevance” tends to show irrelevant results, old datasets:
e.g
https://datacatalogue.cessda.eu/
or with publisher
https://datacatalogue.cessda.eu/?publisher.publisher[0]=Austrian%20Social%20Science%20Data%20Archive%20%28AUSSDA%29
or with topic
https://datacatalogue.cessda.eu/?classifications.term[0]=labour%20and%20employment

Sorting by relevance without search term makes no sense, maybe it would be better to have sort by “Date of publication (newest)” as default, and sort by “Relevance” as default only when a search term is entered.

I am all for the suggestion.

I can see that there has been some discussions of this before it seems #163 with some issues #240 and then perhaps resolved with #289 . This is perhaps something that will be improved with the new code base upgrade

Discussed in UG at 27.01.25

Decision is to update the default sorting of results from CDC

  1. When no input (no search term or filter) is given, results should be sorted by Date of Publication (newest)
  2. When search term is given (with or without any filter), results should be sorted by Relevance
  3. When the filter for "Publisher", "Country" and/or "Collection years" is set, results should be sorted by Date of Publication (newest)
  4. When the filter for "Topic" and/or "Keyword" is set, results should be sorted by Relevance
  5. If filter from 3 & 4 is combined, results should be sorted by Relevance

CCing @jeanninebeeken and @katja-moilanen to check if this aligns with what was agreed

Additionally in the UG discussions arose of the logic of the filters, do the filters function with OR or AND statements
