Description

We need to add testing to this repo. Both unit and react component wise.

There is too much untested code to do this all in one shot. go through in chunks and create tests and or refactor existing test.

initial integration of Vitest for unit tests

- no configuration needed! Vitest automatically checks for a Vite config and uses that
- add one example unit test to show what they look like
- update README

updates all files to conform to prettier rules

also updates lint-staged config so that formatting is automatically
fixed as part of the pre-commit hook
