There are times when a TOC member may become unavailable for legitimate short-medium lengths of time (e.g. health or family issue) or even instances for one reason or another, they decide it's best for them to step down.
The TOC members shoulders a large, and frequently time-sensitive workload, making these instances very disruptive.
In discussion with the TOC, we thought of a potential option - TOC shadows.
There would be TWO shadows, selected as the "next" candidate on the ranked choice election list for the GB seat and TOC seat.
Shadows would be non-voting members of the TOC
They would not be assigned projects for DD, but may shadow the assigned TOC member and may help in some areas.
If a TOC member becomes unavailable for a short period of time, the shadow may help continue with some of their duties.
Should a TOC member step down, a shadow would be promoted to TOC member.
shadow from GB election would assume the role if a GB elected TOC member steps down
shadow from TOC election would assume the role for all other seats
Shadows would reduce the impact of a TOC member being unavailable or stepping down significantly. They would be able to assume the role without having to execute another election and go through onboarding / learning for the role.
This also opens the door to more members of the community getting exposure to TOC duties and shadows would make good candidates for future elected members even further decreasing the onramping time should they be elected.
