I was looking a bit more into my suggestion made in #1, and I think it might make more sense to be using blockquotes for the excerpts. See here: http://www.w3.org/TR/html5/grouping-content.html#the-blockquote-element. Towards the end of the entry are a few examples with citation (using cite``). While this approach wouldn't treat each element as anarticle``` as was suggested before, it might be semantically more appropriate, particularly when excerpts are recombined in other documents with annotations.
