If they've been eaten, maybe we can just mark each individual mouse in the litter as sacked and leave a comment in the notes field that it was eaten.
If we conclude they're never coming, then presumably we would move the mice to different cages (either with potentially more compatible mates or just for storage). Otherwise, as long as an adult male and female occupy the same cage, perhaps we might as well continue to check?
This raises another possibility: suppose we remove a female from a breeder cage after concluding that she will not get pregnant, but it turns out that she was actually impregnated right before we moved her. We will end up with an unexpected litter in the cage to which she was moved. Should we have 'needs' tell us to check for pups in any cage containing any adult female that was in the same cage with an adult male in the previous 20 days?
