It is best if this WG has, upfront, a Prime Directive/North Star to guide the group's proposals, discussions, and decision making.

My proposal is something like:

#Chickens, #Eggs, and #Roosters: A #NorthStar for the Global Decentralized Systems Community (#GDSC)

Byline: #meggDLs, #Seleggtive #Disclosure, #DEGGCOMM, and #Eggports

The entire digital identity ecosystem is missing out on the #BigOpportunity by not focusing on the right catalyst for the #massiveadoption of #digitalcredentials.

Morphing the chicken and egg mental model: If Hens are the Issuers, Roosters the Verifiers, and Eggs are the digital credentials, the prime objective needs to be increasing the demand for and consumption of Eggs by Holders ...creating hundreds of thousands of ways that drive more Holders to consume more Eggs.

… are great examples of driving the demand for and consumption of more and more digital credentials [and DIDs] (eggs); and secondarily, the demand for hens and roosters (Issuers and Verifiers). The demand for eggs drives the production of hens; and in turn, the demand for roosters. Don’t mess with #MotherNature

Chiming in on procedural question. DIF WGs establish a charter and, optionally, an operating addendum, before WG approval by the DIF steering committee. This WG has been approved by the DIF SC with the following Charter and Operating Addendum, which establishes the goals, deliverables, and operating considerations:

  1. Is there a particular statement(s) from the documents that you would characterize as the North Star for the WG? ...one may be implied but I don't see any characteristic wording in the 2 documents you've referred to?

  2. Who are the authors of the 2 documents?

  3. In the first meeting (after the original kickoff) you stated/agreed that what had been said so far was a "STRAWMAN"? What is straw and what is cast in concrete?

  1. We might have a semantic issue re: North Star. Here's my working definition - same articulation as Microsoft Copilot...

In the context of a project, the "North Star" refers to a guiding principle or goal that provides clear direction and focus. It's a concept borrowed from navigation, where the North Star (Polaris) is used to find one's way. For projects, the North Star is a unifying objective that helps teams stay aligned and make decisions that support the overall mission.

This guiding principle is often encapsulated in a single, memorable statement that reflects the project's ultimate purpose and desired impact². It helps prevent distractions and scope creep by keeping everyone focused on what truly matters.

For example, in a business setting, the North Star might be a key metric that best represents the value delivered to customers¹. This could be something like user engagement, customer satisfaction, or revenue growth, depending on the project's goals.

I would go as far as saying neither DIF (nor W3C) have this type of clearly articulated North Star. This doesn't prevent a particular WG from developing their own.

Let's do it.

Example: What is Web 7.0's North Star?

Microsoft Copilot: The Web 7.0 Foundation aims to create a decentralized operating system for building resilient, secure, and trusted systems on top of the Internet, often referred to as the "ultraweb"². Their "North Star" is to develop a universal, open-source solution for the Internet's digital identity and trust problems.

Key principles guiding Web 7.0's mission include:

  • Decentralization: Ensuring that systems are not controlled by any single entity, promoting a more democratic and resilient web.
  • Security and Trust: Building robust frameworks to ensure secure and trustworthy interactions online.
  • Interoperability: Making sure that different systems and platforms can work together seamlessly.

These principles help Web 7.0 steer the development of technologies that support a secure, decentralized, and user-centric internet.
