Tails OS working installation method request #1103
Comments
So far, I am not aware of Tails OS specific steps, so I am not sure what to suggest. We may need to hear from other who may have tried this first. I'd suggest asking in #element-web:matrix.org. |
Hello @tquest1 |
TBH - I was previously using it with the app installed by using the dotfiles to sync the Element .local/share folder to the Persistence & a script to update the app - but with the frequent updates/problems - it became very tedious.
These days I just use the website - it seems to work fine in the Tor Browser now & that way it's always up to date & if you use a cross-signing password each time you login - you get all of your previous keys & encrypted chats back anyway.

Can I ask you how you were able to install the app and use the desktop version in Tails?
No matter how many times I've tried and read about it, nothing works. I've been trying to install it for a month now.

I'm new to this, so I have no idea how to make it all work. I downloaded the Element installer and installed it, then ran it with torproxy \ proxychains and got an error about some trap. In the end I had to give up the idea. Do you have any problems using the Element web version? When working with a lot of chats start getting errors that it is impossible to send a message (I can send a screenshot). I've been trying to figure out what's causing this for a long time and realized that it's because of the private tor mode. If you set "will delete history when closing the browser", Element will work fine with the decryption key. But in this case it gives access to 1 cookie of unclear what |
Is your suggestion related to a problem? Please describe.
What is the best Tails OS Best Installation Method?
I have tried varied ways of using Element on Tails OS, from just logging in to the TOR Browser & restoring with a key, to installing the app & using an env in the .desktop to use a specified HOME in the Persistent folder & routing through the TOR proxy and/or using a source that syncs with the persistence.conf. Each time, some encrypted messages sent by others when offline can't be decrypted when logging into a new session. Anything sent while both online is ok. This is with backing up/cross-signing enabled for the account. These problems only occur for the Tails sessions, when logging into other non-Tails OS devices with the same account - all encrypted messages can be viewed.
Describe the solution you'd like
I do understand that this problem is specific to Tails, but as Tails OS is targeted for anonymity/privacy - Element is a perfect 'fit'. Could an 'official' or at least a working method be communicated in some way. If there was built-in way to use a proxy in the client & choose a config folder so that the Persistent Tails folder could be used more easily, that would probably make things easier.
Describe alternatives you've considered
If it is hard to achieve in Element then possibly another linux/debian compatible client could be used - but as far as I'm aware feature parity hasn't really been achieved yet on alternative clients
